UC San Diego 78, Fresno State 73: FRESNO — The Tritons (3-0) blew a 13-point lead but rallied for a road win, their 14th consecutive regular-season victory dating back to last season. UCSD led 42-30 at halftime and was up 52-39 with 16:02 remaining before the Bulldogs (2-2) flipped the game with a 23-5 run. Emmanuel Prospere II had back-to-back layups to slice the UCSD deficit to one, and Alex Chaikin and Leo Beath hit 3-pointers on consecutive possessions to give the Tritons the lead for good. Beath led all scorers with 22 points, with 14 coming in the 2nd half. UC San Diego connected on a season-high 12 three-pointers. The Tritons return home to face Idaho this Saturday.
Pacific 69, Long Beach State 66: STOCKTON — The Beach (0-3) controlled the game for the first 25 minutes but lost a double-digit lead down the stretch to post their 18th straight defeat. Freshman Gavin Sykes scored 20 points, including a 4-point play that cut the Pacific lead to 2 points with 1:21 remaining, but he missed a 3-point attempt from the corner that would have tied the game with 3 seconds left. Isaiah Lewis added 14 points and Shaquil Bender had 13 for Long Beach State. Elias Ralph scored 15 points and grabbed 9 rebounds for the Tigers (2-1). Long Beach State plays its home opener Sunday afternoon vs. Illinois State.
Colorado State 93, Cal Poly 79: FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Sophomore Hamad Mousa scored 18 points as the Mustangs (2-2) lost to the Rams (3-0). Colorado State made 16 three-pointers, its most in 4 years, to hold Cal Poly at bay. Sophomores Peter Bandelj and Cayden Ward added 14 and 12 points, respectively, for the Mustangs, who themselves sank a season-best 14 treys. Cal Poly was as close as 4 points early in the 2nd half before CSU salted the game away with an 11-0 run. The Mustangs now head up to Big Sky country to face Montana on Friday.
Hawai’i 88, Mississippi Valley State 56 — HONOLULU — The Rainbow Warriors (2-1) raced to a 49-23 halftime lead and then coasted to the victory over the Delta Devils (1-3) on the opening day of the Outrigger Rainbow Classic. Hawai’i scored the first 9 points of the game and ended the half on a 28-5 run. Harry Rouhliadeff scored a career-high 22 points on 8 of 13 shooting from the field and Aaron Hunkin-Claytor had 11 assists, the most for the ‘Bows in 5 years. Mississippi Valley State covered the 41.5-point spread by only getting outscored 39-33 in a sloppy 2nd half. Hawai’i resumes tournament play on Thursday with a game vs. Manhattan.
